Can You Paint Stucco? A Vancouver Homeowner's Guide
Yes, you can paint stucco. Learn how to prep, repair cracks and choose the right paint for stucco walls in Vancouver's wet climate.

Short answer: Yes, you can paint stucco. It takes paint well when the wall is clean, dry and sound. Most problems come from skipping the prep: painting over dirt, mildew, open cracks or damp stucco. In Vancouver, moisture is the biggest thing to plan around.
Can you paint stucco?
Yes. Stucco is porous and textured, so paint soaks in and grips well. Painting is a common way to refresh faded or stained stucco without re-coating the whole wall.
Two things matter more on stucco than on smooth siding:
- Texture: the rough surface needs more paint and careful application to reach into every pore.
- Moisture: stucco holds water. Paint over a damp wall and it can blister or peel.
Should you paint stucco or leave it?
Paint is a good choice when the stucco is solid but looks tired, stained or a dated colour. It is not a fix for a wall with real damage. If the stucco is soft, crumbling, bulging or has wide cracks, have it repaired first. Paint can hide a problem for a while, but it won't stop water getting in.
How to prepare stucco for painting
Good prep is most of the job:
- Clean the wall. Wash off dirt, chalky residue, cobwebs and mildew. Wet climates grow mildew quickly on shaded walls.
- Let it dry fully. Stucco can stay damp well after it looks dry. See our guide on how long to wait after rain before painting.
- Repair cracks. Fill hairline cracks with a flexible patching product made for stucco. Wider or growing cracks need proper stucco repair.
- Treat stains and efflorescence. White, powdery deposits (efflorescence) mean water is moving through the wall. Find the cause before painting.
- Prime where needed. Repaired patches and bare or very porous areas usually need a masonry primer so the finish looks even.
- Protect windows, trim and plants before any spraying.
How to fix cracks in stucco before painting
- Hairline cracks: clean them out and fill with a flexible, paintable stucco patch or caulk so they move with the wall.
- Larger cracks: these can point to settling or water damage. They usually need a stucco repair, and the patch must cure before painting.
- Match the texture: a smooth patch on textured stucco will show through the paint. Texture the repair to match.
What is the best paint for exterior stucco?
Two types are common for exterior stucco:
| Paint type | Good for | Watch out for | |---|---|---| | 100% acrylic exterior paint | Most sound stucco walls; lets moisture escape | Hairline cracks may still show | | Elastomeric coating | Bridging hairline cracks; thick, flexible film | Can trap moisture if the wall already has water issues |
The right choice depends on the wall's condition. A wall with moisture problems is often better with a breathable acrylic, after the water issue is fixed.
How to paint stucco
- Spray and back-roll: spraying reaches the texture; rolling straight after works paint into the pores.
- Use a thick-nap roller if rolling only, so paint reaches the low spots.
- Two coats are typical for an even colour, following the paint maker's directions.
- Check the weather: dry days with mild temperatures. Read the best time to paint a house exterior in Vancouver.
Can you paint new stucco?
Not right away. New stucco must cure before painting. Paint and stucco makers commonly recommend waiting about a month, sometimes longer. Follow the product directions for your stucco and paint.
Questions and answers
Can you paint stucco yourself? You can, but it's hard work. The texture eats paint, ladders or lifts are often needed, and crack repair takes care. Many homeowners hire a painter for two-storey homes.
How long does paint last on stucco? It depends on the paint, the prep and how much sun and rain the wall gets. Good prep and a quality exterior paint make the biggest difference.
Does painting stucco stop leaks? No. Paint is not a fix for water getting into the wall. Repair the source first.
Can you paint a stucco ceiling inside? Yes, with interior paint and a thick roller or sprayer. Test first: some older textured ceilings need checking for asbestos before any sanding or scraping.
What should a stucco painting quote include? Cleaning, crack repair, priming, the paint type, number of coats and protection of trim and plants. Use our painting estimate checklist to compare quotes.
